Why build military vehicles?

Tanks get the attention, but armies ran on trucks, jeeps, half-tracks and motorcycles. These vehicles are often quicker and cheaper to build than a tank, and they are the easiest way to tell a story in a diorama: a jeep at a crossroads, a truck being loaded, a motorcycle courier. They also make excellent first kits because they have simple shapes and few parts.

What to look for

• Scale match. If you already own 1/35 tanks or figures, stay in 1/35. Tamiya also makes some vehicles in 1/48 to match its 1/48 tanks.
• Open interiors. Jeeps and trucks have open cabs, so the seats, dashboard and floor are visible. Paint them before final assembly.
• Figures included? Many Tamiya vehicle kits include a driver or crew figures, which instantly bring the model to life. Check the box art.
• Tires. Many kits use soft vinyl tires that are easy to paint with acrylics. Some use plastic wheel halves that need seam cleanup.

Classic subjects

• Willys MB Jeep: the American WWII icon and one of the simplest kits to build well.
• Kübelwagen and Kettenkrad: distinctive German light vehicles, quick builds with lots of character.
• 2.5-ton 6x6 cargo truck: the "Deuce and a Half" that carried American supplies across Europe.
• Half-tracks and prime movers: such as the Sd.Kfz.7, larger builds that tow artillery and look great with crew figures.
• Universal Carrier: the small British tracked carrier, built in enormous numbers.
